Monster Chetwynd/Art on the Underground – Last chance to see
Monster Chetwynd: Pond Life: Albertopolis and the Lily lies along a disused length of platform at Gloucester Rd station, open until May 2025 this is your last chance to see this impressive collection of dynamic sculptures.
The 4 metre high sculptural discs were fabricated in our workshop in Greenwich over the course of 6 months. The installation was, in part, inspired by the infamous lily pads at Paxtons Crystal Palace:
“Each sculpture is populated with imaginary creatures – frogs, salamanders, tortoises and dragonfly larvae – that appear to be constructing sections of the Crystal Palace. They show the underwater life of the submerged lily pads, their spiny network of veins playing host to the industrious wildlife. A freestanding salamander, holding an Amazonian lily pad as a parasol, is a humorous, anthropomorphic addition to this scene of amphibian industry.” @artontheunderground
Individual underwater creatures were made by sealing and taking silicon rubber moulds of Monster’s original sculptures. From these moulds we created GRG casts imbedded with metal armatures. They were then covered with a water-based colour wash to give the appearance you can see in these photos.
The sculptures were designed and made with a life after this exhibition in mind and can be disassembled and reassembled when necessary.
Head down to the Gloucester Road tube station until May 2025 to see this free exhibition!
