Tate Britain ART NOW

Image of gallery containing seating element and projection screen

On now until the end of April 2025 Hylozoic/Desires (Himali Singh Soin & David Soin Tappeser) hold an exhibition examining the lost archive of the Inland Customs Line. Instilled by the British Empire in the Indian Subcontinent between 1840 and 1880 and spanning 4,000km, 2,5000 of which was planted hedge. The line enforced the British Monopoly on salt, something which is a key theme of the exhibition, separating the British-occupied Bengal Presidency from independent states, preventing smuggling of this precious commodity.

Projection screen with salt encrusted edge

Working with the artists throughout several stages of experimentation MDM created a salt-encrusted screen to display the moving image installation central to the exhibition. The salt bleeds into the projection material mimicking the protagonist’s urge to break down the physical and political barrier that is the hedge.

For more information on the exhibition which runs until 26th April 2025 please visit the Tate website.
